Instrument assisted soft tissue (IAST) is a technique that uses specially designed tools to manipulate the soft tissues of the body, such as muscles, tendons, ligaments and fascia. The purpose of IAST is to break down scar tissue, adhesions and fibrosis that may cause pain, stiffness, reduced range of motion and impaired function. IAST can also stimulate blood flow, lymphatic drainage and healing response in the treated areas.
IAST is performed by a trained practitioner who applies controlled pressure and strokes with the tools over the target tissues. The tools are usually made of metal, plastic or wood and have different shapes and sizes to suit different body parts and conditions. The practitioner may use lubricant, such as oil or cream, to reduce friction and enhance glide.
IAST can be used for various musculoskeletal disorders, such as tendinitis, bursitis, plantar fasciitis, carpal tunnel syndrome, tennis elbow, golfer’s elbow, trigger points, myofascial pain syndrome and more.
IAST can also be integrated with other modalities, such as Massage Therapy, Osteopathy, and exercise prescription.
